Albums is a selection of latex rubber coated vintage records the artist has been making since 2016. Culling material from his own record collection, Mahalchick meticulously layers and removes skins of pigmented latex rubber, concealing and revealing in response to the imagery on the record’s cover.
Although appearing suspiciously like painting, Mahalchick’s albums remain steadfast in their identity as records and offer a suggestive tactility that rewards handling. These are artworks you feel. Double-sided they are meant to be understood as a whole, each side functioning individually and in tandem with the other. They are also meant to be played. Each well-worn recording contained inside reveals a history of use or abuse. Every pop, click and hiss invites an experience that is both unique and common, novel and familiar. Familiar songs trigger memories, which are then disrupted by skipping passages, which reprogram meaning and demand action. Novel songs invite contemplation or rejection and reveal the vagaries of taste and the effects of personal history.
Michael Mahalchick currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
