Lane Meyer Projects is proud to present A Taste of Reality, a two-person exhibition by Denver-based artists Jordan Garelick and Daphne Sweet. Featuring a collection of framed drawings on paper, Garelick and Sweet’s contrasting styles with dovetailing subject matter are realized in their respective visual vocabularies.
Lively and swimming with motion, Jordan Garelick’s emotive drawings splash to life from the 2D plane. Bold, black, illustrative lines sweep through Garelick’s compositions, accented by soft pops of color. At first appearing as loose, water-like abstractions, tapered lines elegantly bump and bobble into focus, presenting familiar forms such as dogs, cats, and most frequently, vessels that contain liquid. Composed of open-ended lines, there is an effortless fluidity in Garelick’s work.
The female form centers herself as the carrier of meaning across the drawings of Daphne Sweet. Set in worlds of rich cobalt blues and crimsons, a harmonious interplay of expressive lines and familiar forms saturate the page. There is a sense of calmness in Sweet’s drawings, one that envelopes the viewer in deep fields of color as the subjects’ eyes meet our own. In addition to nude figures, the vase, or amphora, is a strong recurring motif in Sweet’s drawings. Monolithic vessels and figures alike posture themselves with an air of fascination.
In A Taste of Reality, line, color, and temporality are joyously at play. The quickness and sense of energy and action in Garelick’s drawings contrast against the slow-motion, elemental figures of Sweet, highlighting the strengths of each artist. Converging on subject matter that departs into disparate artistic flavors, A Taste of Reality samples the flatwork of Jordan Garelick and Daphne Sweet to satisfying ends.
