For Immediate Release:

Lane Meyer Projects is pleased to present Ch-Chess, a solo exhibition of new works by Brooklyn-based artist Renee Delosh. Throughout the exhibition, drawings and sculptures make repeated references to the game of chess and its distinctive checker-patterned board, pieces, rules and variants.

Chess, Anti-Theft, is a sculpture and a playable board, orthodox in design with the exception of stainless-steel ball chains tethering each piece. The chains act as a gesture of convenience encumbered by a heavy whiff of morality, providing an absurdly draconian workaround to the municipal game board, which typically requires that players bring their own pieces.

Taking an alternate approach, the remaining works on view examine the symbolism of chess removed from the structure of gameplay. In a series of drawings, rooks and knights intertwine with imagery pulled from ordinary activities, snapshots, and research. Disparate elements float and layer together, stammering as they repeat, cohering into a landscape of depictions and notations. Here the familiar grid of the chessboard becomes at once an abstraction, an aesthetic object and a site for exploration.

For the duration of the exhibition, visitors are welcome to play Chess, Anti-Theft; please handle with care.
